Hair loss can be a very embarrassing encounter. However, aromatherapy for hair loss has been in use since ancient times. Various essential oils are considered to be beneficial when it comes to hair loss. These include bay cedarwood, grapefruit, jojoba oil, lavender, lemon, rosemary and chamomile. Cedarwood, lavender, rosemary and thyme have been used to treat Alopecia for over a century. Unfortunately, very few scientific studies have been conducted to evaluate their efficacy.
In a recent publication on aromatherapy in the Archives of Dermatology, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in Scotland, a study was done on 86 people diagnosed of Alopecia areata. During the seven month trial, the participants stopped using their conventional alopecia medications, where one group was randomized and received an aromatherapy recipe with Thyme vulgaris, Lavandula angustifolia, Rosmarinus officinalis, and Cedrus atlantica. These essential oils were inoculated in inactive lotion, which was a combination of jojoba and grape seed oils. The mixture was massaged into the scalp for 2 minutes. Similarly, patients were taught to massage the oil into their bald areas of their scalp for two minutes each evening and then wrap warm rug around their head to enhance absorption. One group used the lotion as control experiment.
The outcome was interesting such that 44 percent of those who applied aroma therapeutic oils had improvement against the 15 percent in the control group. The study also employed photographic mapping and measuring of the bald patches in analysing results. The study concluded that aromatherapy effectively treats Alopecia areata, and that essential oils are able to promote hair re-growth. Unlike conventional therapies, the essential oils have much lower risk of side effects and more affordable.
